I aim to make sensuous paintings that have emotional depth and are rich in metaphors and symbolisms. Each painting is intuitively conceived whilst trusting the creative process for content and composition to emerge.
Taking a holistic approach has enabled a deeper connection with ‘self’, culminating in works about ‘states of being’. Informed by disability and with interests in the human condition, my work portrays a sense of personal histories, spirituality and mystery. My recent preoccupation in spatial concepts echoes my interest in psychology, reflecting in motifs and recurring themes, such as; ‘abstract and perspective’, ‘inside and outside’, the in-between places and spaces, and ‘edges and boundaries’.
My primary concern within the developmental process lies within the properties of materials, what they can do, and their relationship with each other. I aim for material presence in my work, and by combining a diversity of materials and techniques and using an assortment of tools, including builders’ or kitchen implements, my paintings result in rich textures, seductive marks, and weathered surfaces.Opposite: Innersanctum1, Size: 12x32 in.sold
