Maria has worked on a number of special projects relating to art and health. Maria’s artistic process has been influenced by a range of ideas, from psychoanalysis and discourses on disability and the therapeutic value of art. These perspectives are integral to her artistic practice and working method.
Maria’s artworks are created through her exploration of the unconscious. She uses an intuitive process that enables her to uncover layers of thoughts, ideas and imagery. As well as using a range of materials to produce her finished pieces, she creates works with a wide range of techniques that allow her to represent and explore her own inner world. These mixed media pieces possess a strong visceral quality; they emerge from a symbolic world of self-inquiry, existing beyond academic abstraction in a deeply human and emotional space.
